Boston is the capital of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and the historical center of New England.
The first settlement in the immediate area of Boston was a short way across Boston Harbor at Charlestown.
eventually surpassing Plymouth and Salem. Until the 1760s, Boston was America's largest, wealthiest, and most influential city.
In 1663 the Duke of York purchased the grant of Long Island and other islands on the New England coast made in 1635 to the Earl
of Stirling. The following year, the Duke equipped an armed expedition, which took possession of New Amsterdam, which was thenceforth
called Province of New York, after him.
Article One of the United States Constitution provides for a federal district, distinct from the states, to serve as
the permanent national capital. The centers of all three branches of the Federal government of the United States are
located in the District, as are many of the nation's monuments and museums.
